POLS 355 Issues of Urbanization

Rural-to-urban migration, accompained by squatter settlements in the physical realm, has been transforming many Asian, African and Latin American societies since the 1950s. This course investigates the social and political outcomes of ``rapid urbanization'' with a focus on squatter settlements and their residents. It covers theories that seek to explain social and economic transformation of ``modernizing'' societies and their urban development. It attempts to develop a critical approach to the ``integration'' question of migrants in their new environment, and while so doing, it focuses mainly on the Turkish case. Gender, ethnicity, religion and regional identity are addressed. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: None.
