This course will examine the major developments in Turkish Literature from the Tanzimat era to the literature from the Tanzimat to the founding of the Republic. Emphasis will be on the inception and transformation of various literary genres including the novel, the essay, poetry, drama and criticism. The contest between tradition and modernity, debates concerning literariness and the place of literature within society, and the social impact of the literature of the period will be among the key areas of investigation. Readings will consist of the major works of significant writers and ports.
