HART 367 Pompeii: Life and Death of a Roman City

In this course we will look at what has been learnt from archaeology about Pompeii, a town in central Italy buried with many of its inhabitants still there by the eruption of the Mount Vesuvius volcano in AD 79. After examining the history of the site and its' public and private architecture up to the time of the eruption, we will examine in more detail the public, social, private and economic life of the place, as learnt from excavation and various scientific approaches, such as DNA and biomolecular analyses of bodies and of food remains, that combine to give a holistic view of Pompeii from 150 BC to the day of its burial in AD 79.
