ELIT 474 Twentieth Century Poetry

This course will introduce students to some of the most significant poems, poets and poetic movements of the period, focusing on issues of language, style and form and connections between poetic practice and history, society and culture. Students will explore the impact of Modernism on poetry in the British Isles, focusing on poets such as Eliot and Yeats, before going on to examine some of the diverse responses and reactions to that legacy in the second half of the century, such as those of the Movement of the 1950s and of the British Poetry Revival of the 1980s. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 6, Prerequisite: ELIT 217 and ELIT 222 and ELIT 270.
