PSYC 321 Cognitive Neuroscience and Rehabilitation
|
Mental rehearsal of actions (motor imagery) and action observation treatment have recently gained attention as promising rehabilitation tools for patients with neurological disorders. Neurophysiological basis of these innovative tools are represented by the activation of the mirror neuron system in humans.
This course is designed to introduce the main features of this neural structure as a novel approach for training in the rehabilitation of patients with neurological disorders (e.g. autism spectrum disorders). At the end of the semester, students will be able to understand that the underlying mechanism of these new strategies involve the mirror neurons and that dysfunction of this system can lead to problems in social interaction and communication skills.
