LAUD 466 Designing the Sustainable City

This course aims to develop a critical understanding of Sustainable Urban Design (SUD) by looking at the complex human-nature relationship and the environmental consequences caused by this interaction. Students will explore the current issues through analyzing best practices addressing different aspects of SUD at different geographic scales. Students will learn the basic principles to perform analysis using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) tools. They will also examine the role of different actors and institutions in decision-making process, the efforts in formulating guiding principles and action plans to achieve sustainable cities. Through a term project, students will have the opportunity to apply the sustainable practices they learned in the class with the use of GIS mapping software. In the scope of the term project, they will prepare a SUD guideline including objectives, policies and programs to assist future urban development.
Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
