HIST 5660 Peter the Great: The Birth of Modern Russia (1682-1725)

This course is designed to survey and evaluate the reign of Peter the Great (1682-1725), the Tsar who made Russia a European power, in detail. It will cover his wide range of reforms, the resurgence of Russia as an Empire, the wars he fought and the foreign relations conducted in his era with references to the social and cultural traits of his time. The course will not only explore how Peter I reorganized Russia, but it will also enhance the students' understanding on how his legacy shaped the course of Russian history.
