HIST 559 Economic History, the Rise of Capitalism

This class will examine the history of capitalism from the early 17th century to the late 20th century. To help navigate this massive subject, we will limit ourselves to a brief survey of seven commodities that have shaped our modern world: sugar, cotton, opium, coal, tea, oil and uranium.
