HIST 5523 Karamanlides: Turkish Speaking Anatolian Rums

The course aims to familiarize students with a long-neglected and marginalized phenomenon, Karamanlidika (Turkish written in the Greek alphabet), and to place this literature in its historical-social context of the Ottoman Empire, presenting and analyzing facts, personalities, institutions through a variety of texts as well through recent and older scholarly literature. Basic instruction of the Greek alphabet and readings in primary sources will be arranged throughout the course. Aiming to encourage more profound scholarship on Karamanlidika literature and to provide new sources for students of 19th-century history, literature, and culture is also within the scope of the course.
