HIST 5515 Byzantium and the Muslim World (from the rise of Islam to the formation of the Ottoman Empire)

This course examines the processes of socio-cultural, political, economic and religious interaction between the between Byzantium and the Muslim world from the early seventh century to the late fifteenth century. In particular, the course will focus on the forms of co-existence and acculturation between Christians and Muslims living at the turn from the Middle Ages to the early modern period. It will also examine the complex matrix of relations between the Turkic world and Byzantium from the military help the Turkic nomads offered to the Byzantines during the last stages of the Persian world to the appearance of the Seljuk Turks (as they encroached into Asia Minor from the early 11th century on) and later the first Beyliks (including the Ottoman one). Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
