HIST 534 Themes in the History of American Radicalism

This course establishes a conceptual framework, and then focuses on significant episodes in the history of American radicalism. Groups and movements studied include Puritanism, anti-federalism, abolitionism, secessionism, agrarianism, anarchism, socialism, suffragism, and black and ethnic separatism. Topics include the recurring or unique goals and strategies of radicals, the composition of radical groups, their relationship to mainstream society and the government, and their respective successes and failures. Students are asked to think critically and, where appropriate, from comparative or international points of view.
Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
