POLS 223 Comparative Constitutions

This course provides a broad introduction to both the concept of "constitution" and its function in theoretical terms as well as its different forms across different political and legal orders. The course starts with an historical overview of constitutions across time and place and then examines their form and function in both Western and non-Western contexts. This is followed by an overview of the formal role of constitutional courts as well some of the unwritten dynamics. The final part of the course is devoted to reflections on the long-term function of constitutions in terms of providing both political stability and change.
