IR 4198 Nuclear Proliferation and International Politics

The main objective of this course is to enable students to achieve a solid understanding of how nuclear weapons changed international politics in the Post-Cold War era. It aims at providing students with the necessary skills and competences to analyze the role played by nuclear weapons in shaping inter-state relations. The course also seeks to educate students about the possible solutions to the dangers posed by these weapons. To help students understand the impact of the atomic bomb on our world from 1945 to the present, this course will look at why countries acquire nuclear weapons, how they build them, under which circumstances nuclear weapons have been used and how they have been used in military strategy. It will also be explored the efforts of countries that tried to acquire nuclear weapons but failed and analyze a variety of counter-proliferation policies. Contemporary topics such as nuclear trafficking and the push for global nuclear disarmament are also examined.
