IR 4197 Humanitarian Action and Development: Sectors and Skills

This is a survey course of the core sectors and skills in humanitarian action and development. It aims at familiarizing students with the knowledge and skills required by humanitarian practitioners to formulate and manage programs in operating contexts with a particular focus on key challenges faced by women and children, refugees and displaced people. The course explores how international organizations and non-governmental organizations have become the preliminary actors of humanitarian action. The purpose of this course is to review the increasing role of the NGO sector in humanitarian action and provide the participants with an applied and in-depth perspective of the composite issues and skills needed to engage in humanitarian action. To familiarize students with the implementation of humanitarian and development projects, the course will draw on a mix of lectures, discussions, guest speakers and trainings on certain tools of project management. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
