IR 4196 Cultural Heritage: Politics, Management, Regulations

This course will focus on the politics, management and regulations of cultural heritage, conceived as tangible and intangible testimonies of the human past. It will be divided in three sections, each revolving around one of the main themes. Each section will consist of theoretical classes followed by the discussion of case studies. The first part will discuss how cultural heritage links to identity, memory and communities, and the various uses of heritage as a tool to promote political agendas. The second part will concentrate on the management of cultural heritage. In this part, research techniques that can be applied to the investigation of public perception such as ethnography, participant observation, and structured interviews will be introduced. The last part will focus on institutional bodies regulating, funding and promoting cultural heritage at the state and inter-state levels. The course will also discuss the upon international legal frameworks that cannot policies on heritage, and the extend to which these policies are applied by individual governments.
