IR 4144 Politics and Conflict in Sub-Saharan Africa
|
The aim of this course is to trace the causes of Sub-Saharan African politics and conflict throughout history. We will also look at theoretical explanations of conflicts, including the greed vs. grievance debate, "resource curse" literature as well as arguments with respect to the effects of international/foreign interventions in conflicts as a reason for conflict eruption, prolongation and recurrence. At the end of the course, students will be familiar not only with Sub-Saharan history, but also with major conflicts that plagued the region as well as how these conflicts are explained in the academic literature.
