IR 4134 Continental Political Thought

The course aims to offer a concise, comprehensible and exploratory introduction to continental political thought, with special emphasis on the ways that it has already influenced and may be appropriated by international political theory today. The course functions as a sequel to Social and Political Philosophy I and II (political philosophy from Plato to Marx) offering useful theoretical support to the understanding a great part of contemporary theoretical debates in IR. It presents the basic themes and ideas in the development of continental political thought through a concise analysis of the texts of notable continental thinkers from Martin Heidegger and Carl Schmitt to Alain Badiou and Jacques Rancière. Those thinkers are examined in the social and historical context of their times, explaining some basic concepts developed in their works and their impact on the development of contemporary international political theory. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
