IR 4133 Writing for International Policymakers
|
This course is designed for students aspiring for a career in policy practice and wanting to learn how to effectively advocate with policymakers and the public. The course is divided into four modules. The first module draws from IR's foreign policy analysis (FPA) literature to teach students how to comprehend and navigate the policy environment. The second module acquaints the students with the four elements of effective communication (substantive, structural, stylistic, and argumentative) and their specific aspects such as different modes of reasoning (ethos/logos/pathos), persuasive techniques like the Monroe Motivated Sequence (MMS), and the essentials of evidence and argument such as argumentation schemes and logical fallacies. The remaining two modules are oriented towards practice, giving the students an opportunity to work on writing a political speech and an opinion piece. In each module, the student first hear from a practitioner (a political speechwriter or a magazine editor) the behind-the-scenes of how such writing is done. Then, they work on planning, drafting, and delivering such writing on our own.
