IR 4123 Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development

The main objective of the course is to analyze the concept of sustainable development in theory and practice
specifically focusing on the interactions between the public domain, business world and the world we live in.
Past and present strategies for promoting sustainable development, resistance to the concept, and some
alternative conceptions and theoretical underpinnings of the notion of sustainable development will set
the basis of discussions while the implications of the concept in politics of various sectors such as energy,
transport, environment, agriculture and natural resource management will be explored. In particular the course
will help the students to establish a connection between economic development and environment in terms of
sustainability in the long-term and will help them to understand why international economic competition
has and will have a continuous and pressing sustainability dimension. Topics like fast growth, production
patterns, and population change will be reformulated from an environmental point of view allowing for
critical thinking for future.
