EDEB 549 Travel Writing

Travel Writing is a rapidly expanding and dynamic field of study that is structured by theoretical and interpretative concerns raised by postcolonial and gender studies. This course begins by introducing students to critical debates surrounding travel writing and then invites them to analyze how Western travel writing engaged with and represented the Ottoman Empire and Turkey from the eighteenth century onwards. Students will then consider how Ottoman and Turkish writers have challenged these representations in their own writing. The course finishes by critically reading modernist and postmodernist travel writing that interrogates the role of place to memory and identity in the context of transnational tourism, migration, capitalism, neo-colonialism and globalization. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
