EDEB 545 Gender and Fiction
|
The current climate is full of contradictory ideas, images and interpellations of gender and sexuality. This course explores how Turkophone and Anglophone cultural production has interrogated these contradictions thereby representing and problematizing societal pressures regarding gender and sexuality throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. In this course, students will trace the development of feminist writing in modernist and postmodernist literary traditions, examine the role of masculinity in classic modern literary texts, and conclude by studying literature and cinema that asks whether gender is entirely socially constructed or inherent to being human.
