EDEB 544 Gender and Sexuality in Turkish and European Literature

This course takes as its starting point Michel Foucault's argument that, far from being suppressed by bourgeois morality during the long nineteenth century, sexuality in fact emerged as a prominent discursive object during the period. From the Gothic imaginary of the late Enlightenment to the birth of psychoanalysis at the turn of the twentieth century, we will analyse a wide selection of texts (novels, short stories and plays from the Ottoman Empire, as well as from Western and Central Europe) in order to understand how literature refracted both this proliferation of new discourses on sexuality and the reshaping of socially-constructed gender identities brought forth by the numerous political, social and cultural upheavals that punctuated the nineteenth century. With its focus on the long nineteenth century, this course complements EDEB545 (Gender and Fiction) which covers the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Each of the two courses can be taken independently of one another. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
