EDEB 542 Fictions of Migration
|
Although the concept of migration from one place to another predates the formation of nation states, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries have witnessed unprecedented movement from rural to urban places and from one country to another. In this course, students will focus on how writers and filmmakers have examined migration to and from three global centers: London, Berlin and Istanbul. Comprised of fiction and film inspired by British postcolonial migration, the Turkish gastarbeiter (‘guest workers') in Germany, migration from rural Anatolia to Istanbul and the recent migrant crisis, this course exposes students to the diverse ways that migration marks literature and film, and challenges students to think beyond categories of national literatures and cultures associated with traditional cannons.
