HART 441 Gender and Body Language in Greek and Roman Sculpture

This course examines in detail the salient features of classical statuary, from the Archaic period to Late Antiquity, within the central theme of gender and body language. After initially focussing on the divine, classical statuary expanded to include real persons. Whether of the divine or of the great, alive or dead, it often personified ideals and role models for contemporary society, and in particular the ways of expressing female and male sexuality.
