HART 335 Monuments of Babylon

Babylon, named The Gate of the Gods, was by 600 BC the ancient world's largest city, and home to two of its ``ancient wonders.'' Situated in today's southern Iraq, Babylon's urban plan, palaces, temples, museums, housing and lifestyle are known from the Greek historian Herodotus and other visitors, from the Old Testament, from Babylonian texts, and especially from a century of excavations at the site and its surroundings. The course will examine major aspects of this remarkable ancient city, with a focus on balancing the written and archaeological evidence. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
