AMER 480 Hemispheric American Studies

A "hemispheric" approach to American Studies means looking at North, Central, and South America as one large unit known as the Americas. The goal of this course will be to expose students to various literary texts, films, and public policy/legislature from various countries in the Americas. For example, we will read U.S. legal documents such as HB 56 and SB 1070 alongside such authors as Jorge Luis Borges, Richard Rodriguez, Junot Diaz, Adolfo Caminha, Sandra Cisneros, Esmeralda Santiago, Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Isabel Allende (and others). This panoramic view of the Americas will provide students with a theoretical framework to better understand the U.S. in relation to its closest neighbors and to see how literature functions as theory throughout Latin America. The major languages of the Americas are English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. In this class we will read texts in translation and also, at times, watch films in their native languages with English subtitles. Because the issue of national borders is such an important and contentious issue, a section of the class will be dedicated to "Border Studies" in the U.S. and beyond. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
