Introducing the novel as a literary form, the course offers a history of the development of the novel in America. Students are expected to apply various approaches to the reading of any selected novel or novels. Authors may include Hawthorne, Melville, Twain, S. Crane, H. James, R. Hall, K. Chopin, R.H. Davis, E. Wharton, C. Perkins Gilman, K.A. Porter, A. Smedley.
