ELIT 465 Jane Austen

This course explores selected novels by Jane Austen, considering both formal and thematic aspects, from the use of free indirect discourse and the ubiquity of the marriage plot to the rituals of courtship and the quest for individual fulfillment. Through readings of specific novels, the course introduces students to a variety of critical responses to Jane Austen such as historicist and feminist ones. The syllabus may include some of the innumerable adaptations of Austen's works.
