ELIT 410 Ecocriticism and the Victorians
|
Focusing on the relation between literature and the natural environment, this course will approach Victorian fiction, poetry, and essays through the lens of ecocriticism. The Victorians were attuned to ecological questions in part because they confronted environmental degradation as a result of the industrial revolution. Formally and thematically, Victorian authors responded to environmental issues such as pollution and deforestation. As we read works by Gerard Manley Hopkins, Thomas Hardy, Christina Rossetti, John Ruskin, William Morris, H. G. Wells, and others, we will explore how ecological concerns helped shape Victorian literature.
