ELIT 391 The Pre-Raphaelites: Literature, Art, Influence and Culture
|
This course introduces students to the Pre-Raphaelite movement, begun by three young artists in 1848 as a form of revolt against established cultural and artistic forms. In the works of the Pre-Raphaelites students will examine some key ideas of the mid to late Victorian period, including the relationships between past and present, art and work, men and women, Britain and other countries, and between classes. They will consider form, style, tone and context in literature and art and will locate the works we consider in their historical and critical moments. The course will enable students to make connections between literature, art, architecture and culture, and will equip them to analyse and make arguments about the specific forms, preoccupations, influences and cultural meanings of Pre-Raphaelite art and literature.
