ELIT 388 Plays and London since 1850

This course offers a study of the plays that examine the characteristics of London city from 1850 to 1995. Along with the close analysis of the plays that reflect the manners of Londoners when they were written, the course aims to probe into the London productions, efficiency of the London theatres and the ways in which plays contribute to the social change in a historical perspective. By the end of the course students are expected to be familiar with the work of a number of dramatists writing for British theatre from the 1850s onwards and they will also be able to consider the relationship between British drama and social change in and about London during the period.
