ELIT 384 Philosophy and Literature

This course offers a philosophical examination of the concept of literature, the nature and distinctness of meaning in literature, the relations between literature and truth, and the values inherent in literature. Some at least of the following questions will be pursued: Can works of fiction be philosophical? Is it possible to define literature? What are the criteria of validity in interpretation? What is distinctive about poetry as a mode of discourse? Having completed the course students should be able to formulate the central philosophical issues regarding literature and literary criticism as well as explain and employ the fundamental concepts relating to literary criticism, including the concept of literature itself, literary meaning, and literary value.
