MATH 230 Probability and Statistics for Engineers

Basic concepts of probability (sample spaces and events, permutations, combinations, conditional probability and
independence). Discrete and continuous random variables, their probability distributions, expected value and
distribution parameters. Discrete probability distributions: Binomial, geometric, negative binomial, Poisson distributions.
Continuous probability distributions: uniform, normal, exponential, gamma and chi-squared distributions.
Jointly distributed and independent Random Variables. Covariance and correlation. The sampling distribution of sample mean.
Central Limit Theorem and its applications. Estimation. Confidence Intervals, Hypothesis Testing.
Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5, Prerequisite:
MATH 102.
