PHYS 438 Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics

Hydrogen-like ion, fine and hyperfine structures, multielectron atom, LS and jj couplings. Atoms in static magnetic and electric fields. Radiative transitions, selection rules, Einstein coefficients, rate equations, resonance fluorescence, Hanle effect, optical pumping. Molecules: rotational and vibrational motion, Franck-Condon principle, infrared and Raman spectra.
Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5, Prerequisite:
PHYS 315 and PHYS 325.
