PHYS 211 Waves and Optics

Mechanical and electromagnetic waves: simple harmonic motion, coupled oscillations, normal modes, derivation and solutions of the wave equation; energy transport, standing waves, Doppler effect. Introduction to optics: Fermat’s principle, geometric optics, lenses, imaging, interference, diffraction, polarization and their applications; basic principles of lasers and modern photonics.
Credit units: 4 ECTS Credit units: 6.5, Prerequisite:
MATH 102 and PHYS 102.
