BIM 215 Database Management Systems

The objectives of this course are to explain, compare and employ the techniques and methodologies used in Database Management Systems (DBMS), in particular with the Entity Relationship model and the Relational Data model. The course consists of class sessions plus labwork sessions. The class sessions will start with database concepts, definitions, specifications and objectives. Normalization of database tables, Structured Query Language (SQL) conceptual design, its verification and logical design are introduced in design concepts. DBMS transactions and data independence will then be covered. These theoretical concepts are applied and enhanced through labwork sessions, during which students will analyze, design, create and manipulate databases. The labwork sessions prepare the students earn the certificate for European Computer Driving (ECDL). Module AM5, Database, Advance Level. Finally, the contributions of DBMS to an organization's operations, control, and planning activities will be studied. Students carry out a term project to implement the subjects introduced in both class and labwork sessions. Credit units: 4 ECTS Credit units: 6, Prerequisite: BIM 201.
