IR 571 Russia and Turkey

This course explores the history of Russian-Turkish relations from the late imperial period up until the present day. Rather than simply surveying inter-state relations, this course seeks to familiarize graduate students with the often overlooked similarities between the two countries. Both Russia and Turkey has had a similar record of modernization under the Romanov and Ottoman empires and managed to overlook their geopolitical differences after their respective revolutions in the early 20th century. In order to challenge the new international order that emerged in Paris in 1919, internationalist Bolsheviks and nationalist Turks cooperated across the 20th Century. In many ways, the undercurrent that continues to drive contemporary Russian-Turkish relations is this shared desire to achieve parity with the West. In this course, our main attention will be on this persistent pattern of economic cooperation. Credit units: 3 ECTS Credit units: 5.
