HART 208 Roman Art and Archaeology

This course examines the origins and development of Roman art and architecture in its archaeological setting from the Etruscan period through to the reign of the emperor Constantine. The course focuses on the evidence from Rome and Italy, but also looks at the impact and influence of Rome on local art and architecture in the various provinces of the Roman Empire. Throughout the course an emphasis is placed on understanding the role of art and architecture in the Roman World in general, and in particular its use as a form of political propaganda.
